In late September 2025, I finally convinced my friends Billy and Scott to join me on a much-anticipated motorcycle trip. This was the first ride on a motorcycle for Billy since his knee surgery, so this was a much needed ride to get back in the saddle. We chose Lone Pine, California as our base and camped at Tuttle Creek Campground, nestled against the Sierra Nevada with sweeping desert and mountain views.
Saturday's Adventure
We crossed Owens Lake and made our way up to Cerro Gordo, the old mining town perched high above the valley. After descending we headed north up the valley to Reward Mine. We rode our bikes into the mine—yes, deep into the tunnel—which was a highlight and a first for both Billy and Scott.
The day continued with a stop at the historic Manzanar internment site, followed by a fun ride through some sandy terrain in the basin toward the Whitney Portal. We ended the day exploring the winding roads and cinematic rock formations of the Alabama Hills. Back at camp, we grilled tri-tip and corn and enjoyed a killer dinner under the stars. It lighly rained after dinner, so by then I was sleeping well in my tent.
Sunday Wind-Down
Sunday’s ride was more relaxed. We zig-zagged up to Horseshoe Meadow, climbing to over 10,000 feet, where the air was crisp and the views were unbeatable. We returned to break down camp, tired but grinning from ear to ear.
For Billy, it was a triumphant return to riding. For all of us, it was an unforgettable weekend of dirt, dust, laughter, and friendship.
I look forward to the next adventure.
